Not So Far Apart | a poem

There is only an arm’s length between us,
enough to see straight into your brown eyes
as we think about touching the unknown.

A moment in time has led us to this,
forgetting connections, hellos, goodbyes,
we have clutched our guts, zipped up our futures.

All the walls, the barriers, the armies
have served as walkways, bridges, changing tides,
to bring us here, standing in crocodile lines.

But we are close, watching each other’s moves,
willing one person to break out, to rise
and then we will flow, currents in one sea.
