Top 10 Looks for Halloween: Drag Race Edition

Queens do spooky, that’s a given, but which of the looks that have graced the mainstage of Drag Race would turn heads the second you entered a Halloween party? Whether strikingly scary or glaringly glamourous — which Queen would snatch the crown and reign as Hallow’s Eve Monarchy? I’ve compiled a handy and not-at-all-subjective top 10 of the best conceived, constructed and executed looks that match this theme.

10. Pearl - Snake S7E4

This is a simple look — but Pearl still looks elegant and gorgeous. It’s executed well and would be a go to for having everyone look at you, whilst looking like you’ve not had to make too much effort.

9. Peppermint - Princess S9E3

Peppermint (as Princess Carcinogeneta) looks amazing here, the look is a smash from head to toe and for a challenge that leads to cutesy, airy kind of looks, she executed this and made it werk.

8. Acid Betty - Neon Realness S8E4

Whilst Acid Betty may not have made the most lasting impression in her run on the series, but she could turn a look and I will forever love this strange pop-art-neon-black lagoon fantasy.

7. Milk - Toga Party S6E2

Honestly I was never personally endeared to Milk, but can’t fault her execution of weird, outside-the-box looks. Her beards may have scandalised Michelle Visage, but there’s no doubt this one’s a knock out.

6. Katya - Reveal AS2E4

A good Halloween look is as hilarious as it is unsettling — Katya nails it with this one. I remember first seeing this reveal and howling with laughter. Can you imagine flipping your dress down and hair up halfway through a party to reveal this? I want and need to.

5. Ben De La Creme (Fly look) S6E9

The execution of this look is exquisite - and not just the construction. DeLa’s commitment to scuttling down the runway on all fours  really sparks the character of what is just an excellent look.

4. Raja S3E3 (Carrie) S3E3

Raja took that harrowing iconic moment from Carrie and said “hey I’m gonna make this pretty.” Her make-up is picture perfect beauty queen and the dress is simple, ingenious and gorgeous. Raja can intuit what to wear to make her look amazing every time, and whilst some queens may have better individual looks, she never looks bad.

3. Phi Phi O’Hara (Cosplay) AS2E3

Phi Phi may be the perennial villain of the Drag Race universe, but her cosplay is next level. This look is detailed and complex, but not overly busy (it’s literally all blue and gold!) — which would have been easy to do with a Sci-Fi look. This one shows such a keen editorial eye — and really showed Phi Phi’s growth from Season 4.

2. Crystal (Post Apo) UKS1E4

Honestly when I came up with this list I wasn’t really expecting any of the inaugural UK cast to end up on it, but here we are! It isn’t an understatement to say Crystal absolutely floored me with this look. Ok sure, if someone turned up dressed like this at your Halloween party I’d side-eye them and mutter “bit much” into my cocktail glass whilst trying to locate my straw with my mouth. But it is fabulous. From the freaky teeth and mouth stretcher to the metal plates (that she used industrial tools on, on stage!) it is both horrifying and fascinating.

1. Sharon Needles (Post Apo) S4E1

I was so enamoured by newbie Crystal that I almost put her in the top spot, I really did. But it would be remiss of me not place the original fairy horrormother in the top spot. The first time I saw this look it made me feel sick — because I’m incredibly squeamish. It’s been made so brilliantly to disgust the eye — but underneath the original shock, Sharon still looks beautiful. And there’s nothing like blood oozing from your mouth to liven up that Halloween soiree, eh?
